Flurry Of Filings In Minn. Terrorism Case

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — There was a lot of activity Thursday in the terror case involving a number of young Minnesota Somalis accused of traveling or attempting to travel to Syria to join ISIS.

With the deadline to file motions in the case approaching Friday, a flurry of them -- 24 so far -- were filed Thursday. And the FBI informant in the case could be made public, if the defendant's attorneys get their way.

Included in the filings were motions to dismiss some charges, severing a defendant from the joint trial and requests for disclosure of information to the defense, including evidence against the defendants.

New filings show the FBI's informant nicknamed "Rover" was paid nearly $42,000 for his cooperation. The defendants' attorneys claim that man remains free, despite previously lying under oath. They want to speak any federal informant on this case and want to see the evidence against the accused men.

Six young men, whom authorities described as friends who met secretly to plan their travels, are accused of conspiracy to provide material support and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

The complaint says the men planned to reach Syria by flying to nearby countries from Minneapolis, San Diego or New York City, and lied to federal investigators when they were stopped.

A motion hearing is set for Sept. 2 at 9 a.m.
