Flooding Closes Twin Cities Streets, Delays Construction

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Many areas of the Twin Cities have already seen several inches of rain, and with more in the forecast flooding is becoming a big concern in some areas.

Some city streets are closed Tuesday morning because of flooding with the water not allowing traffic to pass through. That includes Wirth Parkway in Minneapolis, which is closed from Golden Valley Road to Plymouth Avenue.

The Minneapolis Public Works Department said if this rain keeps up, the road may not reopen until the weekend. There a couple of other road projects on Interstate 35W in Lakeville that have been delayed until next week.

Construction outside of buildings has also been at a standstill. The weather has put Stahl Construction about two weeks behind on finishing work outside Ave Maria Academy's new school building in Maple Grove. The project manager there said currently every construction business is being impacted, or anyone who deals with work in or around buildings.

"If it's an electrician that has indoor projects and outdoor projects, unfortunately if it's raining or if the weather is dictating that an outdoor project can't be worked on they have to then jump around and move to an indoor project," said John Peterson with Stahl Construction. "Some trades you can do that with, a trade like paving contractors or earth work contractors, unfortunately that's really not the case. A lot of times those guys just have to go home."

Some businesses are working overtime though. Water damage repair businesses are extending hours to deal with all those flooded basements.
