Firefighters Killed In I-35W Crash Identified
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Officials have identified the two firefighters who died Saturday on Interstate 35W after their truck hit the median and rolled.
Twenty-five-year-old Alan Swartz and 23-year-old James Shelifoe, both of Baraga, Michigan, died in the afternoon crash in Blaine, just north of Minneapolis.
The two were members of the Beartown Firefighting Crew, located in Michigan's Uppers Peninsula. They were headed to battle a wildfire in Utah.
Seven other people were in the truck when it crashed. Several suffered injuries but are expected to be OK.
The State Patrol says the truck left the interstate for "an unknown reason" before hitting the median and rolling.
The crash remains under investigation.
