Feed My Starving Children Packs 1 Billionth Meal

COON RAPIDS, Minn. (WCCO) -- A local charity is close to a milestone Monday morning. Feed My Starving Children will pack its one billionth meal.

Feed My Starving Children has locations across the Twin Cities metro, but its headquarters are in Coon Rapids. The company was established in 1987 and is a non-profit Christian food aid organization which packages and sends nutrition-packed meals to starving second and third-world countries around the world.

One of their most popular places to send food is Haiti among other countries. Lisa Ellis with Feed My Starving Children said the organization fills bags that have up to six meals per bag. They contain vitamins, dehydrated vegetables, soy protein and rice.

Feed My Starving Children will reach its one billionth meal on Monday, and Ellis said they are always looking for more volunteers to help pack meals. She said they've have more than four million volunteers since they started in 1987.

Ellis said many of the volunteers that come though are corporate organizations and business groups, schools comes in groups and they get a variety of ages and people. Part of the experience is learning how they put the meals together and who they're sending them to.
