Faribault Prison Placed On Lockdown After 4 Officers Hurt In Assault

FARIBAULT, Minn. (WCCO) -- Another Minnesota prison has been placed on lockdown after investigators say an inmate attacked several guards, four of whom went to the hospital.

It happened at the correctional facility in Faribault Monday morning.

The attack comes nearly two months after an inmate killed a corrections officer at the Stillwater prison.

A spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Corrections says an inmate punched a guard in the face in the dining hall around 11:30 a.m. Several more guards jumped in to help and three of them got hurt.

The spokesperson said four guards were taken to the hospital.

The inmate was then moved from general population to restrictive housing. The attack led to a lockdown.

Visitors -- including news media -- were not allowed on the prison's property.

The Faribault prison has a medium security facility within its secure perimeter and a minimum security facility outside it. It has about 2,000 male inmates, making it the largest in the state by population.

The spokesperson says the incident will be fully investigated and the safety of corrections officers and others in their facilities is the prison's highest priority.
