Family: Man Hurt Jumping On Bus Is Improving
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The 21-year-old Mankato man who was hospitalized after falling off a bus earlier this month is improving, family members say.
On May 4, Mankato Police were called to the area of Warren and Pleasant Streets after 2 a.m. on a report of a person laying in the street. When authorities arrived, they found Dylan Smyth. He had suffered head injuries.
Surveillance video showed Smyth hanging onto the back of a bus by standing on its rear bumper as it left a bus stop. Police said it's believed he fell from the bus. He was listed in critical condition upon arriving at the hospital.
On Tuesday, Smyth's family said Smyth was making progress and had been transferred to an impatient rehabilitation program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester.
"Dylan remains strong and resilient, and we are extremely proud of him," his parents said in a statement. "We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support, positive thoughts and prayers we have received during this time."
The "Late Nite Express" bus is provided by the city of Mankato for people to get a safe ride home that have had too much to drink.
Investigators earlier said that alcohol was a factor in the accident. Smyth's family said his attempt to ride on the back of the bus was not a stunt, it was an effort to get home because the bus was full.
