Driver Pleads Guilty In Crash That Killed Teen

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Coon Rapids man has pleaded guilty in a drunken-driving crash that killed a teenage boy last summer.

The Hennepin County Attorney's office say 24-year-old Michael Vanwagner pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide.

According to the complaint, Vanwagner's Pontiac Grand Am struck a woman's car in Brooklyn Park, then took off and slammed into another car waiting to make a left turn. The driver of that car, 16-year-old Jason McCarthy of Brooklyn Center, later died.

Prosecutors plan to seek the maximum 10-year sentence when Vanwagner is sentenced Feb. 20.

The Star Tribune reported Vanwagner posted a picture of his damaged car to Facebook after the crash with a smiley face emoticon. Vanwagner told the newspaper he wrote the post before he realized he'd hit someone.
