Dozens Of WWII Veterans Given Honor Flight To Washington, D.C.

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Dozens of local World War II veterans are back from a one-day trip to Washington, D.C.

They flew out at 6:15 a.m. Saturday morning and returned home around 10:30 p.m.

Hundreds of people and bagpipes were at the airport to welcome them home.

Honor Flight is a nonprofit organization from Ohio that offers free flights to World War II veterans to see the National World War II Monuments in D.C. The organization says sadly, because of their age or financial constraints, many of these veterans have never seen their monument before.

"It was surprising and awesome," said Mike Sivanich, a veteran on the trip. "Everywhere you went, they were really greeted with a lot of respect."

Since 2005, more than 120,000 veterans from across the United States have gone on these Honor Flights.
