DNR: Harvest Numbers Show Growth In Deer Population
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The Department of Natural Resources says the state's deer population has grown, as shown by harvest numbers from the second weekend in the firearms season.
Hunters have registered 118,599 deer through the second week of the season, the DNR says. That number is up from 104,785 deer taken over the same period last year.
Wildlife officials say the buck harvest during the first 10 days of this season was up 18 percent over last year, showing the deer population has grown since its low point two years ago.
The DNR is projecting the total harvest this season between 140,000 and 155,000 deer.
For much of the state, the firearm season ended last Sunday. But some areas have seasons open until the end of the month.
