DNR Expands Trout Fishing Along Vermilion River
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- With Minnesota's stream trout opener coming up on Saturday, fisheries officials say new opportunities have opened up in the Twin Cities metro area.
Land acquisitions by the Department of Natural Resources in Dakota County will give anglers nearly two additional miles of shoreline to explore along the Vermillion River.
The DNR has acquired a 52-acre aquatic management area that straddles the main branch of the Vermillion River, protecting 4,100 feet of shoreline. And a 62-acre acquisition now allows access to 6,900 feet of shoreline along the south branch of the Vermillion River.
The Vermillion River was once considered unfit for any game fish, but it's gained a reputation as a trophy brown trout stream. Since 2005, the DNR has acquired land protecting nearly 10 miles of shoreline along the Vermillion.
