MINNEAPOLIS — A man is expected to survive after being shot during a possible drug deal in Minneapolis' Dinkytown neighborhood Thursday morning, police said.

The Minneapolis Police Department said witnesses reported hearing gunshots near 13th Avenue and Seventh Street around 9:25 a.m., then saw a vehicle crash into a fire hydrant and two people run away.

About a block away, police found a man with a gunshot wound that was not life-threatening. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare.

Police said the shooting may have stemmed from a drug deal, but the circumstances are still under investigation.

The University of Minnesota sent an alert about the shooting, though the victim was not a student.

Earlier this month, three people were shot in Dinkytown after a fight broke out on 13th Avenue and Fourth Street.

In September, the university opened a Dinkytown safety center about a block away from the site of the triple shooting.
