St. Paul police hear possible gunshot while transporting suspect, incident under investigation
ST. PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul police are investigating an incident at the Ramsey County Jail Friday evening, after St. Paul police officers heard what they believed to be a gunshot while transporting a man.
The incident stemmed from a police call in which officers were told that a man would not come out of a gas station bathroom. The police officers responded to the 2000 block of Marshall Avenue, and when they tried to get the man out of the bathroom, he "charged at the officers," St. Paul police say.
The man was taken into custody for trespassing and obstructing the legal process, and taken to Ramsey County Jail. While exiting the squad car and trying to get the suspect out, officers heard a noise, which they thought "could have possibly been a gunshot," according to police.
Officers tried to take cover, police say, but the man did not cooperate. More officers were called in to assist, and used "less lethal tools and drones." Ninety minutes later, the man was then taken out of the squad car and taken to Regions Hospital to be evaluated.
St. Paul police say the incident is under investigation. No firearms were found at the scene.
