Despite historic flooding, northern Minnesota resorts not closing during vacation season
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- It's been a summer of historic flooding for towns along the Minnesota-Canadian border.
The area hit hardest is the Rainy River Valley, near International Falls. While water levels are starting to drop, the damage left behind won't be quick to fix.
Larry Kec, of Kec's Kove on Kabetogama Lake, said his 300-foot dock washed away and some of his buildings flooded.
"Once the water's down, you still have to deal with all the damage and repairs," he said. "A lot of 'em, the sewer and septic systems have gone under water, so they can' be re-operated until they've dried out sufficiently."
Even though resorts in the area are recovering, they remain open for business. Resorts in the Boundary Waters and near Voyageurs National Park rely on business during the summer months in order to make ends meet.
