DeRusha Eats: Pinstripes In Edina

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- There's a certain expectation that comes with food at a bowling alley. But Pinstripes in Edina isn't that at all.

Chef Nelson Pinos runs an all-scratch kitchen. They even make the pasta in house.

"We're not [just] a bowling alley, you know," Pinos said.

Pinos just won the "Taste of Edina" cooking competition against some very talented chefs from Pittsburgh Blue and Crave.

"That was beautiful," he said.

It made people take notice of the great bistro restaurant and quality kitchen that also has a couple lanes of bowling.

"The main one who had something to do with my career was my mother," Pinos said.

He grew up in Ecuador, where his mom had a small restaurant. She encouraged him, even though he wanted to be a police officer.

"She's just my inspiration," he said.

There's no doubt she'd be proud of his maple-glazed salmon with a hint of jalapeno, and whole-grain mustard that makes it pop. It's served with a unique organic salad with red quinoa, cucumber, avocado, tomato and mint. It's a great summer dish, and it's certainly not bowling alley food.

The seafood linguini gets its color from a saffron broth. It's served with grilled shrimp, mussels and a gorgeous jumbo lump crab.

The idea is to have a place where you or the kids can bowl or play bocce ball - and have excellent food that always hits the mark.

You can just eat at Pinstripes, just bowl or both. It's located just south of Southdale Mall on France Avenue.
