Derailment Disrupts Commuter Rail Service
RAMSEY, Minn. (WCCO/AP) -- A freight train derailment in the Twin Cities metro has canceled Northstar commuter rail service between Big Lake and Ramsey.
Officials say about 15 cars tipped but most were empty.
Metro Transit canceled service early Friday because the derailed Burlington Northern Santa Fe train is blocking the tracks. Metro Transit says limited bus service will be offered from Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley. But, the buses can't carry as many passengers and trips will run significantly longer.
Customers will not be charged fares for replacement bus service.
Metro Transit officials suggest riders look for alternative means of travel.
Metro Transit announced that Northstar trains will operate on Saturday, June 14 and Sunday, June 15.
Rides will be free on June 14 and June 15 in conjunction with the opening of the METRO Green Line. Extra trips have been scheduled and each Northstar train will have six passenger cars to accommodate more passengers.
The cause of the incident is still under investigation.
