Suspect at large after shooting outside Minneapolis market leaves 1 dead, 2 critically hurt

Shooting outside north Minneapolis market leaves 1 dead, 2 critically injured

MINNEAPOLIS – A man is dead, two others are in critical condition, and a suspect is at large after a shooting Wednesday night in the parking lot of a north Minneapolis market.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara says it happened at about 8:20 p.m. outside of Star Food Market off of Lowry Avenue North.

Officers were nearby at a traffic accident at Lowry and Emerson avenues when they heard gunfire. The city's ShotSpotter system detected 23 rounds were fired.

Police identified the fatal victim as 19-year-old Jaydon Cousins from Brooklyn Park.

O'Hara says their preliminary investigation shows that two men walked up to a parked vehicle, which then backed up and dragged one of them. That man was able to free himself from and then run across the street, where he collapsed and died from his injuries.

O'Hara says the vehicle got stuck in an embankment, and the man driving and his female passenger were then struck by gunfire. Another man was also shot.

The driver was taken to North Memorial Health, where he is in critical condition. The woman in the car with him was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where she is in critical but stable condition.

O'Hara says one handgun was recovered in the parking lot, and another was found where the man who died collapsed.

Police are searching for at least one suspect -- a man who fled the scene on foot, who they believe is armed with a "small rifle."
