Semi driver killed in fiery crash on I-35 near Albert Lea

ALBERT LEA, Minn. – A semi-truck driver was killed in a crash Thursday afternoon in southern Minnesota, shutting down a stretch of Interstate 35 for hours in both directions.

The Minnesota State Patrol says it happened in the northbound lanes just before 3 p.m. south of Albert Lea in Freeborn Township.

The semi driver -- a 64-year-old man from Spirit Lake, Iowa -- struck a guard rail, causing his truck to start on fire.

The victim's identity hasn't been released. The state patrol is investigating.
