House Speaker Daudt Pushing For Special Session This Week

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Republican House Speaker Kurt Daudt is pressing for a special session this week to wrap up unfinished work.

Gov. Mark Dayton said Monday he's in no hurry to call lawmakers back to St. Paul to pass a public works package and possibly transportation funding, too. A last-ditch effort to pass those measures failed just as the Legislature hit its deadline at midnight Sunday.

Daudt told reporters he thinks the Legislature should reconvene in the next few days while lawmakers are still in town.

But the partisan divide over funding mass transit that led to the bill's failure remains. Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk says he won't pass a transportation package that doesn't provide some funding for a light-rail train to southwestern suburbs.
