Mike's Mix: The Garter Belt
Every Friday, Mike Augustyniak picks up a new cocktail recipe from a local mixologist. Throughout April, Mike's picking up some exciting recipes from the newest dining hotspot in south Minneapolis: the just-opened Heyday in the Lyn-Lake area. This week's selection has a provocative title but a smooth and breezy taste.
Ingredients
1¾ oz. Martin Miller gin [Note: In this case, the type of gin matters. Use a lighter American-style gin, as opposed to a dry London-style gin.]
¾ oz. Rose wine
½ oz. Dolin Blanc
One eyedropper of Bittercube's Bolivar bitters
Directions
Combine ingredients and stir over ice, serve up in a chilled martini glass. Squeeze a coin-sized slice of grapefruit rind over the drink, and discard.
Taste Test
While the name and color of this drink comes from the rose wine, the taste and balance comes from the type of gin you choose. Brand is less important than style ... and you're looking for American style gin. Don't expect a gin-ny kick out of this one; it's smooth, almost sweet, and great for sipping in the sun.
