Fire At Brooklyn Park Apartment Suspicious In Nature

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Authorities say a fire that started at a Brooklyn Park apartment complex Monday afternoon appears to be suspicious in nature.

The Brooklyn Park Fire Department was dispatched to the Huntington Place Apartments on the 5800 block of 73rd Avenue North before 3 p.m. on a report of a fire.

Huntington Place Apartment residents say a fire that appeared to have started on the second floor of one building, and caused significant smoke to billow through the halls.

A number of injuries were reported at the scene. Authorities say three people were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation. One resident, Antonio Griffin, said that he saw about 4 or 5 people jumping from windows.

Authorities were using city buses to help displaced people stay warm. Fire officials say residents of about 24 apartments were displaced as a result of the fire.

Deputy Chief Todd Seitz says the fire appears to be suspicious in nature. Authorities say it appears someone set a piece of furniture on fire in the hallway of the second floor in a building. Fire officials say the exact cause is under investigation, but the initial call was a report of furniture on fire.

Four people were injured in a fire at the same complex in April 2014.
