Dinkytown apartment building deemed uninhabitable after large fire

Dumpster fire spreads to U of M apartment building

MINNEAPOLIS -- Crews say no one was hurt in a fire in university housing near the University of Minnesota campus Saturday afternoon.

The Minneapolis Fire Department says a three-story residential apartment building caught on fire on the 1000 block of University Avenue Southeast just before noon.

Firefighters say they found a dumpster fully engulfed in flames with the fire extending up the side of the building.

Upon further investigation, crews discovered the fire had extended into the building to the third floor, attic and roof. The fire also extended through half of the second floor.

A portion of the roof collapsed on the back half of the building.

After several hours of extensive overhaul and water, crews were able to extinguish the fire.

The building has been deemed uninhabitable. MFD says Red Cross is not needed for the 30 residents affected by the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
