Cops: Man Sped Off From Officer, Died In Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Police in the northwest metro say a 28-year-old man died after he sped off from an officer trying to pull him over and crashed into a brick sign.

The Coon Rapids Police Department says that the officer saw the man driving recklessly and possibly drunkenly just before 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning.

The officer tried to pull over the driver, but he sped off and ran a red light at Northdale Boulevard and University Avenue.

After that, the driver crashed into a large brick sign on the intersection's northeast corner.

The driver, who is from Coon Rapids, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was the only person in the car, and has yet to be named.

Police say alcohol is a suspected factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.
