Convict Coach Accused Of Trying To Contact Victim From Jail
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) - An ex-tennis coach, serving time for sexually assaulting a girl, is facing new accusations he tried to contact his victim again.
Daniel Hubbard-Wilson, 27, coached the teenager at Visitation High School in Mendota Heights.
He pleaded guilty and is serving a year in jail.
Hubbard-Wilson initially got a much lighter sentence than the six years in prison he was facing.
But he was back in court Thursday morning, facing accusations he paid other inmates for their phone time as a way to contact a third party on the outside, who he hoped would contact the girl through Twitter.
The girl was 15 years old at the time of their sexual relationship.
Even before pleading guilty in January to third-degree criminal sexual conduct, Hubbard-Wilson was accused of trying to contact the girl against court orders.
In December, while legal proceedings were still underway, a judge raised Wilson's bail to $1 million after he tried to contact the girl several times.
Now, Wilson's probation officer said that he contacted a third party outside the workhouse on April 13 and again on April 15.
He allegedly told that person to post messages on the victim's Twitter account as a way to contact her.
At Thursday morning's probation violation hearing, Wilson denied that he tried to contact the girl.
Wilson's probation officer is recommending that his current one-year sentence be thrown out and that he serve a six-year prison term.
In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Wilson's attorney, Eric Olson, said, "Mr. Wilson entered a denial to the probation violation today, but we are confident that we will be able to resolve this matter on the next court date, which is June 4th. Mr. Wilson is taking this matter very seriously and wants to resolve this issue as soon as possible."
Wilson-Hubbard also worked as a coach both at Fred Wells Tennis and Education Center and at Highland Park in St. Paul.
