Construction On I-694 In North Metro To Begin Monday

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Commuters who travel on Interstate 694 north of the metro should expect delays this Monday, when construction of additional general purpose lanes begins.

According to MnDOT, the two-year project will add a third general purpose lane to each direction of I-694 between Rice Street in Little Canada and Lexington Avenue in Arden Hills.

Construction will be broken up into two phases to keep the I-694 open during construction. The westbound lanes will undergo construction first.

During construction, two lanes of traffic will be open in each direction. For those who need to get off the highway within the construction area, commuters are advised to stay right where exit lanes will be available.

Construction also includes:

• Rebuilding interstate ramps at Lexington Avenue, Victoria Street and Rice Street
• Opening the right lane of the bridge from northbound I-35E to westbound I-694. The right lane will become an exit-only lane to Rice Street
• Improving storm water drainage throughout the corridor

Motorists will also encounter nighttime lane closures in each direction of the interstate when crews widen the roadway and prep to shift traffic in June. Concurrently, the ramp from Rice Street to westbound I-694 will close for the construction season.
