City Council Votes To Reduce Street Parking For Mpls. Residents
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – The number of parking spots for Minneapolis residents could soon decrease.
The Minneapolis City Council unanimously passed an amendment to the zoning code that will reduce the number of parking spaces for residential areas that are by frequent buses and rail transit.
According to the city of Minneapolis, in most zoning districts the city requires apartments and condominiums to provide enough parking spaces for the number of units in the building.
The new amendment will mean smaller-scale, multifamily residential buildings within one-quarter mile of frequent bus service and one-half mile of rail service will have their off-street parking requirement eliminated.
Larger multifamily units within the same distance of public transit will only be required to offer one-half space per dwelling unit.
This is the first time since 2009 that an amendment has been made to parking requirements in downtown zoning districts.
