17-Year-Old Charged In New Hope 'Nerf Wars' Crash

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 17-year-old male is facing charges in connection with a May crash in New Hope related to the "Nerf Wars" game that injured two high school students.

The juvenile male, who has not been identified, has been charged with two felony counts of criminal vehicular operation in connection with the May 16 crash. The charges state the male was the driver of a vehicle that was occupied by another passenger.

Police say both were participating in a "Nerf Wars" game and chasing another vehicle involved in the game. The male driver is accused of blowing through a stop sign on Winnetka Ave., forcing another driver and passenger into a power pole.

Authorities say the male's vehicle was traveling about 40 miles per hour eastbound on 46th Avenue when it went through a stop sign at Winnetka Ave. The male's vehicle hit another vehicle heading southbound at the intersection.

Two people in the vehicle the male hit were hospitalized with injuries.

Two Lakeville high school students died last year in a crash when a truck rolled over while they were playing the "Nerf Wars" game. Johnny Price, 18, and Jake Flynn, 17, were killed in that crash.
