Central High School Alumni Name Scholarship After Philando Castile

ST. PAUL, Minn. (WCCO) -- Philando Castile now has a scholarship named after him.

Sunday afternoon, graduates of Central High School in St. Paul held a fundraiser for that scholarship to honor Castile. He graduated from Central in 2001 and was a St. Paul Public Schools employee for many years prior to his fatal shooting last month.

Castile's last job was as a cafeteria supervisor at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet School. The scholarship will be available for students who intend to study child development or culinary arts.

Castile was shot by a St. Anthony police officer during a traffic stop on July 6 in Falcon Heights. The aftermath of the shooting was live-streamed on Facebook by his girlfriend and sparked weeks of protests.

The Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is still investigating the shooting.
