Cedar Cultural Center Welcomes 2 International Blues, Rock Bands

Despite the warm weather lingering in Minnesota, the summer season is coming to a close. And with it, the summer concert season.

But that doesn't mean that there is a lack of exciting and innovative artists coming to the state. Just glance at the Cedar Cultural Center's upcoming schedule and it's easy to see.

Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 9, the Cultural Center will welcome Tuareg rock band, Terakaft.

Tuareg is the name for a subset of people that populate the Saharan region of North Africa that tend to live a nomadic lifestyle.

Originating 20 years ago as part of a desert blues group Tinariwen, Terakaft gradually formed into its own group in 2001. Maintaining the essence of blues with socially and politically inspired lyrics, Terakaft lightens their message by adding a bit of pop and dance to their beats.

Their music defines and grounds a people whose past has been fluid and ever-evolving.

Following Terakaft, on Monday, Sept. 14 the Georgian roots band Zedashe will take the stage at the Cedar Cultural Center.

Zedashe will be playing a four-week American tour with six stops in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

Much like Terakaft, Zedashe helps offer insight into an lesser-known society. They keep the traditions of medieval Georgia alive with Orthodox chants and three-part harmony folk songs.

Terakaft will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Tickets cost $30. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit the Cedar Cultural Center online.

Zedashe will perform at 7:30 on Monday, Sept. 14. Tickets cost $18 in advance and $20 the day of the show.

Zedashe will also be performing at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral, 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Tapestry Folkdance Center, 8 p.m. Saturday at Hamline University and at 4:30 p.m. at GYST Fermentation Bar.
