2 Minnesota hunters accidentally shot by children in separate Sunday morning incidents

MINNEAPOLIS — Two Minnesota men were accidentally shot by children Sunday morning in separate hunting accidents.

The first shooting occurred just before 8 a.m. northwest of the Twin Cities in Becker Township, according to the Sherbourne County Sheriff's Office.

A 45-year-old man from Becker Township, who was not hunting, was with his 12-year-old in a deer stand. She had just successfully shot a deer when she accidentally fired another round, striking her dad in the leg.

Another member of their family who was present applied a tourniquet to his leg before first responders arrived. The man was taken to North Memorial Health in Robbinsdale for treatment.

The Hubbard County Sheriff's Office says the second shooting happened just before 10 a.m. in Helga Township, which is just south of Bemidji.

The victim, a 50-year-old man, had just taken a 10-year-old boy out deer hunting and was explaining how to unload a bolt-action Ruger .270 hunting rifle.

The boy accidentally pulled the trigger, and a round pierced both of the victim's buttocks.

The victim was taken to Sanford Hospital in Bemidji before he was airlifted to Fargo Hospital.

The victims' conditions are unknown. Both shootings happened during youth hunting events.
