Bill Would Have Commerce Dept. Do More To Return Unclaimed Funds

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Lawmakers are trying something new to return thousands of dollars to Minnesotans who may not know their money is missing.

The state has a record $711.5 million of unclaimed funds.

Two south metro lawmakers sent out letters to a thousand people living in Inver Grove Heights and South St. Paul notifying them of their unclaimed cash.

They've written a bill that will require the Commerce Department to make a bigger effort in notifying people who are due money.

The department says it currently doesn't have the funding or manpower to send out individual notices when money goes unclaimed.

You can see if you have any unclaimed property by visiting the Commerce Department website.
