Benefit Planned For Survivor Of South Mpls. Shooting That Killed 3
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- The community is coming together to support the sole survivor of a shooting.
Maria Romero is recovering from her injuries. Friends say she was shot multiple times. The shooting happened two weeks ago at an apartment on 34th Avenue in south Minneapolis. Police found her ex-husband dead, along with their two kids.
Friends describe Romero as someone who always wants to make others happy, especially her kids.
"She's a great mom, she's passionate about her kids," friend Hope Wilson said.
And that's why Wilson said learning Maria, her two kids and ex-husband were shot was devastating. Only Maria survived.
"I guess you just never realize what's going on in people's lives," Wilson said.
No one knows exactly what unfolded inside the south Minneapolis apartment. Police will only say it's an open investigation, focusing on a domestic-related homicide -- and they are not looking for a suspect.
Caleb was friends with Luis Ronquillo at Richfield Middle School.
"It's almost impossible to think that someone that you liked died," Caleb Wilson said.
He says Luis had joined the track team, and calls him a funny guy.
"What happened to him shouldn't happen to anyone else," Caleb Wilson said.
Fifth grader Nahily Ronquillo liked to draw. A potential she will never have the chance to fully realize.
"And as a mother that, they're can't be something worse than that happening," Hope Wilson said.
But Wilson said Romero has shown signs that she wants to be here.
"She does have this strong inner spirit. She is resilient and I cannot fathom that situation but she is pulling through and she is fighting," Hope Wilson said.
Maria Romero remains in the ICU on a respirator.
The fund-raiser for Romero is Saturday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Richfield High School. If you can't make it, but would like to help, here is the GoFundMe page.
