Bells Tolling April 9 To Mark Anniversary Of Civil War End
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Bells will ring in unison across Minnesota and other places in the country on April 9 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's end.
In Minnesota, members of a Civil War Commemoration Task Force are encouraging people at churches, city halls, historic sites and anyone else to join in the bell ceremony that afternoon. It will start on 2:15 p.m. and last for four minutes — one for each year of the war.
It's on the day that the Confederate Army set its terms of surrender at Virginia's Appomattox Court House.
For now, there's no centralized ceremony in Minnesota. But there be activities at Fort Snelling.
More than 24,000 Minnesota soldiers fought in the war. Some 600 were killed in battle.
