Arrest Made In Maplewood Shooting That Killed 1
MAPLEWOOD, Minn. (WCCO/AP) — Authorities have arrested a man in connection with a shooting outside a busy Maplewood strip mall that left one man dead and another injured.
Police say the shooting happened about 8:40 p.m. Saturday in front of Merwin Liquors on Rice Street.
Police believe that underage people in a car may have asked a group of three men to buy alcohol for them. The men then went into the store. When they came out, shots were fired from the car.
One man, later identified as 25-year-old Terrence Jermaine Woods, died at Regions Hospital. The other man, 24-year-old Jamil Isaiah Ellis, was hit in the leg and is expected to survive. Another man who was with Woods and Ellis ran from the scene without getting hit.
Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said that the early investigation has led to the theory that the three or four people in the car wanted the men to buy alcohol for them.
"It could be that simple, which obviously makes this even more tragic and an utter senseless act of violence."
The driver of the vehicle and sole occupant, identified as 19-year-old Enock Hassan Mohamed of Maplewood, was arrested and booked into Ramsey County Jail on probable cause charge of murder, Schnell said.
"We are committed to finding everyone responsible for this crime to ensure justice and accountability," Schnell said.
Schnell says investigators plan to submit preliminary findings to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office on Monday for review and consideration of charges.
