Storm Dumps 9 Inches Of Snow On Central Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- As expected, the bulk of the wet snow accumulated north of the Twin Cities. At times visibility was terrible, and the road conditions deteriorated as the day progressed.

The National Weather Service reported that Collegeville had received 9.5 inches of snow by Tuesday afternoon. Avon reported 9 inches of snow, Little Falls 8 inches and Madison, New Munich and Mora 7 inches.

WJON-AM reported that the Minnesota Department of Transportation reopened the eastbound lanes of Interstate 94 near Opportunity Drive in St. Cloud. The lanes were closed earlier Tuesday due to multiple crashes.

According to WCCO-TV chief meteorologist Chris Shaffer, Minnesotans will see the snow accumulate across the metro Tuesday night and into the overnight hours, but the totals will not rival those of towns from Avon to Little Falls.

The good news is that temps will stay in the 20s and 30s, which will help the salt go to work on the roads. And the sunshine in Wednesday's forecast will help accelerate the melt.

"I would expect a slower commute tomorrow morning with a major improvement by the time you come home in the late afternoon/evening," Shaffer said.

One negative will be the wind. It will blow from the northwest 10-20 mph with stronger gusts. That will cause some snow to blow across roadways causing some slick spots.

Be careful, and be happy that Thursday features warmth and sunshine (a good combo for the first day of spring).

"We may see more snow on Friday, and sadly the weekend will be a flashback to our winter feel with highs in the 20s," Shaffer said.
