Andrew Wiggins' Sisters Have Basketball Dreams Of Their Own
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- When your dad played in the NBA, your mom was an Olympic sprinter and your big brother's the number-one pick in the NBA draft -- it sets you up for the understatement of the year.
"I think we've got good genes," Angelica Wiggins said. "Really good genes."
Her sister, Taya Wiggins, agrees.
When the Timberwolves brought Andrew Wiggins from Cleveland to Minnesota, his family moved from Canada to the Twin Cities to come with him -- mom, dad, and his two little sisters, who are both carving out their own basketball dreams.
Angelica is a senior on the Hopkins varsity team, ranked number one in the state. Taya is on the sophomore team.
"Everyone thinks that, like, because we're like Wiggins' sisters we're gonna come out dunking (laughs)," Angelica said. "But, like, we're not gonna dunk!"
What they are gonna do is enjoy the family sport to the fullest.
"It's really fun," Angelica said. "Like, we've been around it since we were really young."
"And if you aren't clear about something," Taya said, "you can always ask my dad, my brother."
Ask their brother about them?
"Angelica, she wants to score. She works hard, and she can really shoot the ball," Andrew Wiggins said. "Taya, she likes to create for others. She can shoot the ball too, but she's a pass first type of girl."
Who's more like Andrew?
"Well, I think my defense is good, and Andrew's defense is good," Taya said.
Without missing a beat, Angelica chimes in through a laugh.
"Mine's good too!" she said.
Andrew says he's been to a couple of games, and it's great supporting his sisters.
The move to Minnesota was for big brother Andrew, and for big brother Andrew's basketball career. But both of his little sisters say it's been great for their basketball careers, too.
"Because at our old school, it wasn't really, like, a big thing for girls," Angelica said. "But here, it's like, big."
Taya says It's better playing in Minnesota.
"We get more of an opportunity to show ourselves," she said.
But thankfully, they say, without the same kind of spotlight.
"Yeah, it's not the same (laughs)," the Wiggins sisters said.
The Wolves face off next against the Suns on Feb. 20.
