Adrian Peterson Enters Not Guilty Plea, Recusal Hearing Delayed

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson has officially waived his formal arraignment and entered a plea of not guilty in a case accusing him of child abuse.

In a document filed last Friday, Peterson acknowledges that he received his indictment and pleads not guilty to the charges.

Peterson is accused of using excessive measures to punish his son, stemming from an incident last May in Texas.

A recusal hearing has been set for Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 1:30 p.m. Retired Tarrant County Judge Jeff Walker will determine if Judge Kelly Case should be recused from hearing the case, after calling lawyers on both sides "media whores," a statement he later recanted.

Peterson will be on trial later this year to defend himself after a grand jury in Montgomery County decided the open cuts and bruises on his 4-year-old son from a switch were not "reasonable punishment."

Peterson has long maintained that he did not intend to hurt his son but regrets the "unintentional injury."

Peterson remains on the NFL commissioner's exempt list, meaning he's barred from team activities but is still collecting a pay check.

The charges carry two years in a state jail and a $10,000 fine.
