Activists Rally Against Arctic Drilling At Lake Calhoun
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- People against drilling for oil in the Arctic Ocean hit waterways from coast-to-coast Saturday, including here in the Twin Cities.
It's a movement called "kayaktivism." It began last May in Seattle, where people came together to protest Shell Oil's plan to drill for oil in the Arctic Ocean.
People all over the country gathered at beaches, lakes, rivers and parks for a national day of protest. Locals got together at Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis.
"There's cities across the country, across the nation today, doing kayaktivist events," protester Lois Norrgard said. "But what we're trying to do is influence President Obama to cancel any Arctic Ocean drilling."
Last May, the White House approved a plan by Shell Oil for exploratory drilling in the Arctic Ocean from July 15 to September. Last week, Sen. Al Franken co-sponsored a bill to stop offshore Arctic drilling.
