Accused Shoplifter Charged With Assaulting Macy's Employees

BURNSVILLE, Minn. (WCCO) -- An accused shoplifter has been charged with attacking store employees when he was confronted about the theft.

According to a criminal complaint, 20-year-old Carlos Antoine Smith of Rochester, Minn. was at a Macy's store in Burnsville, Minn. last Saturday along with one other person, who the complaint did not identify by name.

A loss prevention officer noted that Smith and the other person had taken pieces of clothing and were leaving the store without paying. The total value for the clothes was later determined to be nearly $700.

When employees confronted the two outside the store, Smith and the other person attacked them, according to the charges. Both employees involved were struck in the head, investigators said.

Smith and the other person were arrested at the scene.

Smith, who has a number of prior assault convictions as well as a robbery conviction, has been charged with two felony counts of fifth-degree assault and theft.
