6-Year-Old Girl Gives Gifts On Her Birthday For 'Jack's Basket'

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- A 6-year-old Minnesota girl decided instead receiving gifts, she wanted to give to others on her birthday.

Along with ice cream and fun games, Hope asked friends and family to help pack baskets. They are filled with books, toys and baby clothes. The baskets will be given to families in the hospital whose newborns have been diagnosed with Down Syndrome.

Hope and her family were inspired after watching a story on WCCO-TV about an organization called "Jack's Basket."

"We just talked about it and she said that this is something that she really wanted. And so it was fun to do, and invite her whole class and family and friends," Laura Smith, Hope's mother, said.

Jack's Basket was started by a Minnesota mom who gave birth to a son, Jack, with Down Syndrome. Carissa Carroll said she wanted to change the way the diagnosis was delivered, and fill parents with hope.

More than 20 baskets have been delivered to families since the program started in October.
