Strong winds knock out power for thousands in metro area

30,000 without power in west metro

MINNEAPOLIS -- Thousands of people are without power on Saturday afternoon.

The Xcel Energy outage map reported 786 power outages around 12:30 p.m. That number increased to 936 by 1 p.m., with around 70,000 people impacted. By 3 p.m., the number of people without power had diminished to 43,665. The majority of the outages were recorded in the west metro, specifically around Minnetonka and Jordan.

The company said the strong winds in the metro area caused equipment damage. 

Crews are on the scene and working to restore power, the company said in a statement.
