50K Attend Race For The Cure On Mother's Day
MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Today is the day we celebrate all of the mothers in our lives. And that's one reason why thousands of people are at Mall of America Sunday morning.
It's the 22nd annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.
The event is one of the largest in the world and raises money and awareness for both women and men who are battling breast cancer.
Sunday's event is one of more than 150 events just like it around the world.
One participant we caught up with says the Race for the Cure isn't about the disease, it's about the people.
"There's so much inspiration that comes from knowing that everybody that walks past or runs past has a story and it's all unique," said Amy Elias. "It's the same -- it kind of comes from the same place but it hits everyone in a unique way."
Approximately 50,000 people attended the race this year, raising about $2.5 million for breast cancer research.
The top male finisher of the 5K run was 26-year-old Marcus Aberg, of Sweden (16:02). The top female was 38-year-old Melissa Gacek, of White Bear Lake, Minn. (17:54) and the top survivor was 48-year-old Sarah Wagner, of Eagan (24:42).
