2 Teens Could Face Charges In Fridley Playground Fire

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) – Two teenagers could face charges after a playground at a school in Fridley was destroyed by fire over the weekend.

Fridley Police and fire officials were called to Hayes Elementary School on the 600 block of Mississippi Street at about 2:57 p.m. Saturday on a report that that playground equipment was on fire. When authorities arrived, they were able to put the fire out quickly, and nobody was injured.

Police said a 15-year-old boy came forward and told authorities that he and another teenager were smoking cigarettes in the playground area and that one of their discarded cigarette butts likely started the fire. Both of the teenagers have been identified, but their names have not been released.

All that remains is melted plastic and burned frames of the slides and jungle gyms.

Authorities said they are not seeking other suspects in the case, but the incident remains under investigation by the Fridley Police and Fire Departments. The two teenagers could face charges from the Anoka County Attorney's Office.
