2 Metro Transit Officers On Leave After Suspect Harms Self In Squad Car

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Two Twin Cities Metro Transit police officers have been placed on leave after a 31-year-old St. Cloud man they arrested critically injured himself in the back of a squad car, the AP reports.

The man lit his clothing on fire with a lighter after being put into the squad car, the Minneapolis Fire Department said. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, along with one of the officers who had minor burns.

Metro Transit spokesman Howie Padilla tells the Minneapolis Star Tribune that the man was arrested Sunday morning as part of a criminal investigation near the U.S. Bank Stadium light-rail station.

The officers were placed on standard administrative leave while the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates, the AP says.
