$1M Powerball Prize Claimed In Iowa With Taped-Back-Together Ticket

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines man has claimed his $1 million Powerball prize with a taped-back-together ticket.

Iowa Lottery officials say Pete Kemp showed up Monday to claim his prize. Five numbers on his repaired ticket matched five numbers drawn Saturday night: 24, 29, 38, 48 and 52. But he missed on the Powerball number, 32.

Kemp bought his winning ticket at a Cash Saver supermarket. When he went to a convenience store Sunday to have his winning ticket checked, a store clerk accidentally threw away the ticket while getting paperwork from the lottery terminal.

Kemp realized the mistake as he was about to drive away, so he went back inside.

The ticket had been torn in two, but the clerk retrieved both pieces from the trash, and they taped them together.
