15 Displaced Following Fire In South Minneapolis Home

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) -- Smoke and flames forced more than a dozen people out of their south Minneapolis home in the overnight hours.

Firefighters were called to a home on the 2600 block of 12th Avenue South just before 11 p.m. Saturday.

When they arrived, flames were shooting from the building.

Firefighters put the flames out pretty quickly but crews stayed awhile longer to make sure all the hot spots were out.

The two and half story home had different families living on each level.

In all, 15 people -- nine adults and six children -- ran to safety.

Firefighters initially heard that people may be on the second floor but after searching the home, crews realized everyone got out safely.

"Everybody is alright and the Red Cross is out here to lodge them to for the night, or a week, whatever it takes," said Steve Ebert, a battalion chief with the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Cesilia Ramierz was one of the children who escaped the home. She said it wasn't a smoke alarm that alerted her family of a fire, instead, it was the sound of an exploding aerosol can.

"My mom heard these noises that was popping all over and my mom told us wake up, wake up, wake up, and I didn't know what was happening," Ramierz said.

The flames did the most damage to the top level of the home but firefighters say they were able to put out the flames before the fire destroyed the building.

"We saved the home," Ebert said. "The home is repairable."

The cause of the fire is under investigation. No one was hurt.
