1 Killed When Train Hits Car in Independence

INDEPENDENCE, Minn. (WCCO) -- A 25-year-old woman is dead after being hit by a Burlington Northern train early Saturday morning in Independence, according to the West Hennepin Public Safety Department.

The accident happened at 1:15 a.m. just off Highway 12 at northbound County Road 92.

Authorities say the train and vehicle were both heading west when the vehicle made a right-hand turn at CR 92, driving around the flashing gates.

The driver and lone passenger, 25-year-old Paulina Lang of Buffalo, was stuck and killed by the train.

The West Hennepin Public Safety Department says drivers should always obey the crossing arm and flashing lights at all railroad crossings Also, never try to beat a train because it's hard to judge its speed while approaching a crossing.
