NEXT Weather Alert canceled as threat for winter weather diminishes

NEXT Weather: 4:30 a.m. report

MINNEAPOLIS -- Friday will be another NEXT Weather Alert day due to snow and heavy winds in northern Minnesota.

Much of northern Minnesota is under a winter weather advisory until noon Friday.

The storm system already dropped almost 2 feet of snow in Bismarck, North Dakota. Travel up north is expected to be brutal due to low visibility, blowing snow and slippery conditions.

As the storm system makes its way east across northern Minnesota overnight and into Friday morning, the snow total amounts are expected to decrease. It will stay windy overnight, with wind speeds between 20-35 mph across the state.

The Twin Cities may see a stray snowflake or two early Friday, but it will be frigid. The high will only reach 32 degrees in the metro -- and it will feel more like the teens and low 20s due to wind chill.

The wind settles down this weekend, but we won't warm up. The highs will remain in the low 30s.

In fact, keep your cold weather gear handy from here on out. Minnesota will likely experience colder-than-average temps through Thanksgiving.

NEXT Weather Alert cancelled

NEXT Weather: 4 p.m. weather report

The NEXT Weather Alert has been canceled for the remainder of the day.

Going forward, the wind dies down tomorrow, but we don't heat up for quite some time. Our highs will be locked in the low-30s this weekend.  We will stay dry.

Early next week brings our next best chance of snow here in the metro. We will be watching closely to see if we need to issue a NEXT Weather Alert again.

What we know is that there will be snow possible late Sunday through late Tuesday.  It looks like two waves that may only crank out an inch or two. But it will toy with the roads.

We stay cold until Thanksgiving when the models are hinting at a warmup into the 40s and, maybe, the 50s.
