Zika Scares Not Keeping Crowds Away From Miami Beach, Wynwood On Halloween

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – All the spooks, goblins and action heroes have apparently erased any thought of Zika along Lincoln Road.

Perhaps Spider-Man scared away all the mosquitoes.

"No Zika! It is gone, wahoo!" the masked vigilante said. "We are free in Miami Beach and doing Halloween!"

Despite being in a designated Zika zone, the party rolled on.

And as CBS4's Hank Tester noted, no one seemed to be slapping on mosquito repellent.

Tina Allende, trick-or-treating in Wynwood, summed up the Zika mood best.

"Zika? What Zika?" he said.

Halloween at Wynwood was at full roar. The streets packed in the heart of what was once ground zero for the Zika war.

"I ain't afraid of no Zika," Chris Turner said.

And that's about right, as Wynwood is no longer a Zika zone after aerial spraying and ground spraying. Though it did take local, state and national effort put the damper on the Zika-carrying mosquitos.

Locals said that Monday's Halloween crowd is – at this time of the night – about equal to last year.

"No one is afraid of Zika," a party-goer said laughing.

Bars and restaurants are busy, but most of the action in the streets. It's a good sign that business is back in this unique Miami neighborhood.
