Woman Sentenced To Prison For False BP Oil Spill Claim

MIAMI (CBSMiami/AP) - A Florida woman who pleaded guilty to one count of mail fraud for filing a false claim in connection with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been sentenced to four years in prison.

After serving her time, Caridad Rioseco Alejandrez, 50, will have three years of supervised release.

Her father, 73-year-old Raul Rioseco, was sentenced to one year and one day in prison in connection with a similar case.

Alejandrez and Rioseco filed fraudulent claims against a fund created to settle claims of individuals for costs and damages incurred as a result of the oil discharges. They received $35,900 and $55,000, respectively.
