DAVIE (CBSMiami) – Davie police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash Wednesday night.

Two women and a dog were hit by a driver on 18th Street off of Pine Island Road at around 7 p.m.

The driver never stopped.

"It seems from witness statements that possibly a Corolla, either black or dark blue, was traveling eastbound on 18th Street, explained Sgt. Pablo Castaneda. "(The car) possibly went off the roadway and struck two victims that were standing by their mailbox."

A woman and a dog were killed, a second woman survived.

A neighbor said the woman that died saved the other woman's life.

"Two women checking their mail... and the neighbor was pushed out of the way and the woman that was getting the mail was killed," said neighbor George Law.

It's not clear yet if speed was a factor, but it has been in this residential neighborhood in the past.

"We have had speeding complaints in this park," Sgt. Castaneda said. "Our department has addressed those complaints. Our traffic unit is out here on a regular basis."

If you have any information, please contact Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS.
